Breast reconstruction is achieved by one or more of several reconstructive surgical techniques that can restore the breast to near normal shape, size and appearance. Candidates for reconstruction include women who have had a mastectomy or lumpectomy for breast cancer, women who have had a traumatic injury to their breast or women who have a birth defect that has resulted in a breast shape or size that is not normal.

Breast reconstruction for cancer can be performed immediately at the same time of the mastectomy or be delayed to a later time if indicated medically or more convenient for the patient.

Breast reconstruction can be done using several methods involving tissue expansion and/or implants or the body's own tissues transferred to the chest. Each patient's medical history, body habitus and personal preferences are weighed when chosing a method for surgical reconstruction. These options for reconstruction and the risks and benefits of each are discussed in detail during the initial consultation.

Federal law mandates that all breast cancer reconstructive surgery as well as any surgery performed on the opposite breast to optimize a patient's appearance be covered by health insurance. Our office will write a letter to the insurance company requesting preapproval for insurance coverage for any medically necessary surgery to confirm insurance benefits as needed.
